Through March 2025

WHISTLER’s real estate market had a total dollar volume of sales of approximately $69 Million in March. There were a total of 34 property transactions. Of those sales, 4 were chalets, 11 were townhouses and 11 were condominiums sales.

The SQUAMISH real estate market had a total of approximately $51 Million in sales in March. There were a total of 44 property transactions. Of those sales, 13 were detached homes, 12 were townhomes and 12 were condominiums.

Do Staged Homes Sell Faster?

Do staged homes sell faster, and for a higher price? The short answer is yes and yes. Conditions have started to moderate from the frantic seller’s market Canada has experienced in recent years, largely due to rising interest rates. With homes taking longer to sell and buyers having more time to shop the market, sellers may have to step up their game to win the attention of prospective buyers. This includes engaging an experienced, professional real estate agent, evaluating the comparables, and their asking price, and then staging the property to appeal to the right buyer.

According to a study by the Real Estate Staging Association, staged homes spend 73 percent less time on the market than their un-staged counterparts. But even an un-staged property can sell under the right market conditions. A seller’s market, characterized by high demand and low inventory, generally means buyers will likely scoop up whatever they can get. In a buyer’s market, there are more homes for sale than there are buyers, which means competition is greater among sellers, giving buyers the upper hand. Under these circumstances, staging your property could tip the scales in your favour.

Interest Rate Announcement: Tariffs Loom Large, Prompt Bank of Canada to Hold Interest Rates

Benchmark Rate Sits at 2.75%

The Bank of Canada has maintained its benchmark interest rate at 2.75 per cent, following seven consecutive cuts, citing weaker confidence, slower economic growth and the potential for higher inflation as reasons for its decision. The Bank noted that the shift in US trade policy and the unpredictability of tariffs have created an environment of uncertainty, making it difficult to project GDP growth and inflation.

Canada’s economy kicked off 2025 strong, with solid GDP and the inflation rate hovering near the two-per-cent target, but that could change on a dime, with trade tensions and tariffs expected to negatively impact economic activity and inflation.

Markets don’t like uncertainty, and that’s expected to weigh on activity this spring.

“In Canada, the economy is slowing as tariff announcements and uncertainty pull down consumer and business confidence. Consumption, residential investment and business spending all look to have weakened in the first quarter,” according to the Bank’s announcement. “Trade tensions are also disrupting recovery in the labour market. Employment declined in March and businesses are reporting plans to slow their hiring. Wage growth continues to show signs of moderation.”

Lower consumer confidence may mean a quieter spring housing market, but time will tell how homebuyers and sellers respond to the evolving trade situation and the economic impacts here in Canada.
